Day 3 - Monday 1st August

01/08/2005

Walking, a missing echidna and a(nother) good feed.

Well, after what I wrote last night about expecting to do a lot of walking around...we went out to find an Echidna called 'Slinky', and that involved - you guessed it - a whole lot of walking. But it was starting to get exciting when Peggy told us we were getting close; we all had to try to walk very quietly and not talk so that we didn't scare Slinky away. BUT, when we got to the place that the radio tracked told us that Slinky would be, all we saw was a hole in the ground. Slinky had heard us coming and hidden in a burrow!!

We then went in search of 'Big Mumma' another echidna - who was at the complete other end of the reserve. When we got close, Peggy went off in front and we couldn't see her for a while. When we came around the corner, there she was, with Big Mumma in her arms!!

Peggy was pretty pleased to have caught her in time (she was about to run under a big tree) and we were all absolutely thrilled to be able to see an echidna after we had been learning so much about them. We took lots of photos and weighed Big Mumma, then put her down to see what she would do. She started digging, exactly where Peggy put her down - it looked pretty funny, actually.

Dinner tonight was sausages and mashed potatoes in gravy, with sticky date pudding for dessert - YUM YUM!!! I had to do the dishes tonight, but that didn't matter, because I got to share the job with another teacher, Amy from Port Hedland.

I don't know what we'll be doing tomorrow - I hope I find an echidna. If you find one that's never been seen in the area, you get to name it...hmmm, I wonder what I'd call it...?!
