Day 2 - Sunday 31st July

31/07/2005

Radio tracking, a talking man and 300 hours of hunting.

Today we had a great time learning how to use the radio tracking equipment, which is an antenna you hold in your hand and a radio you hold in the other hand. By listening to beeping on the radio, you can use these to try to find little transmitters that are around the bush; usually they are attached to animals (and so it helps you to find goannas and echidnas out in the bush), but we were just practicing on bushes to start with! It was really fun, and I’ll have to see if I can arrange for us to borrow some equipment from somewhere to try it out.

Peggy and Mike who run this centre are great, and Mike in particular knows SO SO much about nature and has lots and lots of really interesting stories to tell.

Tomorrow we start trying to find goannas and echidnas, using the radio tracking equipment; BUT, they say it takes 300 hours on average to find each echidna, so I reckon we’ll be doing a lot of walking around and looking, and not much finding!
