Guided Reading:
Exploring the Teach Live website.
Skills: listening, reading and writing.
While Miss Tanya does the reading, listen carefully and make sure you ask questions when there are words or things you don’t understand.
STEP 1: type ‘Ctrl-N’ to open a new window. You can now use one to do the website exploring and the other to have these questions open on.
STEP 2: visit the following parts of the Earthwatch website, and answer the questions (in bold).
Home
Go to the ‘Edit’ menu and select ‘Find’.
In the window that appears, type ‘Investigator’ and press ‘Enter’. What is the name of the Principal Investigator of the project that I (Mr Simon) am going on? Which university does she work for?
About Earthwatch
Listen carefully to Miss Tanya reading this webpage aloud.
FOCUS QUESTIONS (for discussion) (thanks to Mr Michael at Jigalong):
Why should everybody know about problems in our environment? [The environment is a collective term for the conditions in which an organism (like us) lives e.g. temperature, light, water, soil, other organisms.]
Why would we want an environment to be sustainable? [‘Sustainable’ in this context means that things that keep the environment healthy remain in place. The antonym would be ‘degraded’ e.g. the saline and structure damaged soils of Western Australia's wheatbelt region.]
Look at the three sub-headings on this page. What are the three main types of thing that Earthwatch does? Which of them will Mr Simon probably be doing? Which of them will you probably be doing?
About Teach Live
This page tells you about the week-long program that Mr Simon is away on. Listen to Miss Tanya read this page.
