Yandeyarra Remote Community School is 130km south of Port Hedland situated on a working cattle station - Yandeyarra Station. The community name is in fact Mugarinya however maps of the area nearly always refer to the community as Yandeyarra (sometimes spelt Yandearra). There are approximately 40 students at our school from Kindergarten to year 12. There are 5 teachers, a Principal, two Aboriginal Education Officers and a teacher's aide.
The students at Yandeyarra are very keen on sports, especially basketball and football. We have a basketball court and an oval and many people of all ages go there in the evenings when it's cool.
To get into Yandeyarra Community you must cross the Yule River. When we have lots of rain, usually just after Christmas time, it can be very difficult to cross the river. This means that people can't get in or out of the community, sometimes for weeks at a time. However, the kids enjoy being able to swim in the river and also catching fish.
Kariyarra is the language for this area but Nyangumarta is the most widely spoken language.
