Lesson One: How to Navigate the Earthwatch Website.

Mrs Lee Kraeter

This is an introductory lesson to help you get the most out of using the Earthwatch Teach Live 2005 website.

1. Type in the website address: earthwatch.designit.com.au   This will bring you to the Teach Live homepage.

2.  Read through the information on this page and answer the following question. What is one of the key challenges facing our schools today?

3. Double click on the North Tom Price Primary School name. This will bring you to our schools section of the website. Read the information about our school and answer the following question. The town is close to what?

4. Under the North Tom Price Primary School name on the left side of the screen you will see 3 sub-headings. These are: Lesson Plans, My Highlights and Photographs. Double click on the My Highlights label. You will also find sub-headings in here (Day One, Before the Trip). Double click on the one that says Before the Trip. Read this.

5. Double click on the Photographs sub-heading. Have a look at the photographs and tell me which one is your favourite.

6. Double click on the Lesson plans sub-heading. Here you will find the lesson you are currently doing called 'How to Navigate the Earthwatch Website' along with 3 others for you. Do not attempt to do these before finishing this introductory lesson.

7. Above the North Tom Price Primary School name you will see a title called About Teach Live. Double click on this. Read through the information. List the names of the teachers involved in the project and which schools they are from. This is important as these are the teachers who will be answering your questions.

8. Now it's time to discover how we will communicate while I'm away on the field trip. From the same list, Double click on the heading called Forum. In this section you will see a range of topics that you may wish to ask questions about.

If you see a topic you are interested in then click on the title. Click on the title 'About Kangaroo Island' to try this out. You will see that someone has asked the question 'How big is Kangaroo Island'. If you wanted to ask a question about the topic called 'About Kangaroo Island', you would simply click on the New Reply button and type it in. In the subject line you type a heading for your questions (Example: About Kangaroo Island). In the message box you type your question followed by your first name and then NTPPS. (Example: How big is Kangaroo Island - Lee NTPPS). Once you have done this, click on the send for publishing button down the bottom.

The word forum is located under the heading ' About Kangaroo Island'. Click on this to return to the list of topics.

If you do not see a topic your are interested in then you can create a new one by clicking on the new topic box at the top of the list of already existing topics. On the subject line type in a new topic. (Example: other animals). Then type your question in the message box followed by your first name and then NTPPS (Example: what other animals can be found on Kangaroo Island - Lee NTPPS). Once you have done this, click on the send for publishing button down the bottom.

Spend some time exploring this section of the website and having a look through the questions that have been sent to the project teachers for answering.

Once you are confident with the sections of the website introduced so far, you can then go and click on other sections from the list. You may like to go in to other school's names and have a look at them.
