After dinner we went down to Brown Beach on a night walk to see if we could come across any Fairy Penguins. When we got there we walked off through the sand dune vegetation. We could hear the penguins under the thick scrub, but we couldn't see them. Walking along the beach we came across one coming up to the dunes from the ocean. Mike picked it up and explained the different parts of its body and their functions. He told us that the numbers of penguins coming to KI is steadily decreasing - preserving the beachside scrub is important for their breeding success. While we were down at the beach we also studied the night sky, it was very clear and we could also see the lights of American Beach.
A highlight for me is watching the western grey kangaroos and the brushtail possums come around in the evening around tea-time and they watch you through the windows. I did the washing up last night with a possum on the window sill watching me. It was probably thinking - "it might be cold out here but at least I don't have to do the dishes."
