answers to your questions
Hi,
Thanks for sending me some questions. Try to put your names on them so I know who asked.
It is cold here on KI and today it is raining so I am glad that I am on the computer. KI is very peaceful, Rachael but I have been very busy. This project normally runs for 2 weeks so we are trying to get it all done in only one.
We have seen one echidna who is called Big Mama. She is at least 40 years old and weighs more than 4kg. The largest an echidna gets is about 5kg and 45cm long but their body weight depends on the time of year. There are about 50 around here and no one knows how many there are on the whole of KI.
So far we haven't seen a rosenberg goanna because they are all down in their burrows. They can grow to 1m in length and weigh 1.75kg. The way you can tell the difference between a lizard and a goanna is that a goannas tail is longer than it's body.
There are seals on KI but we haven't seen one yet as we are not near the ocean. But we have seen fairy penguins.
There are 18 species of mammals, 226 species of fish, 216 species of birds and 26 species of reptiles. Alicia, the endangered species are KI dunnart and the southern brown bandicoot.
The transport on the island is car or bicycle or walking. This is like CI except the island is much bigger. On the research station all we do is walk.
Hope that answers all your questions.
See you next week,
Kerri

Hi,
They are called Rosenberg's Goanna because they were discovered by a German scientist called Rosenberg.
Echidnas have as many spines as we have hairs on our head as spines are modified hairs.

Hi Rhiannon
KI is great. It is a very beautiful place but very different from CI. I am learning heaps of new and interesting stuff about echidnas, goannas, ecosystems and sustainability. The kangaroos, wallabies and possums hang around out where I am working so I can watch them while I am replying to you. Some of them have joeys in their pouches.
How is your project going?
See you next week,
Kerri
