Lesson Three - Mrs Richardson's class

03/08/2005

Welcome Mrs Richardson's class. We have been working together to introduce and collect background knowledge for our Kangaroo Island project. Our first session involved discussing what we would be doing and some information about Kangaroo Island. Then you had a brainstorming session in your groups to come up with a 'what we know' and 'what we want to know' about Christmas Island and Kangaroo Island so that we could compare their ecosystems.

Before we start on the questions.

You might want to write down the meanings of the following words that we discussed.

  • ecosystem
  • endemic
  • sustainability
  • eradicate
  • mammal
  • monotreme

Because you did such a great job of coming up with so many questions I am going to get you to help me answer them.

You can use this site and the one listed along with the information sheets I gave your teachers to see how many you can answer for yourselves.

You might want to go back into your groups and share the questions to save time.

Your questions were:

  • What is the average height and weight of a Rosenberg Goanna?
  • How many eggs do they lay in a lifetime?
  • What do echidnas eat?
  • How long are their spikes?
  • How big is an echidna?
  • Are echidnas or Rosenberg Goannas endangered?
  • Do either species live in family group or individually?
  • What type of habitat do they live in?
  • Is either species nocturnal?
  • What is the height of KI?
  • What native plants are there on KI?
  • How much of KI is arable?
  • How big is KI?
  • What sports do they play on KI?
  • How many rare animals are there on KI?
  • What is the population of KI?
  • Who discovered KI?
  • What cultures are there on KI?
  • Are there ships that go to KI?
  • How many species of animals are there on KI?

If there are still questions you need help with you can email me at kwalsh@cidhs.cx  by next Wednesday or you can ask me directly in the Forum section of this website on Thursday between 10.30-2.00.

When I get back I will look forward to sharing with you all that we have learnt and to see how our Kangaroo Island display is looking.
